The Danger of A Single Story - TedTalk
when an idea is presented to us, or a story, we tend to stick to that concept, refusing to acknowledge or accept any other notion, regardless of its truth
stories provide the means to harm, disempower, or contribute to the oppression of a group, however, they can also empower or inspire a group depending on the story presented
Chapter 3 How To Be An Anti-Racist - Kendi
black Americans are taught to be conscious of their race very young because their parents know that the way in which the social system interacts with them as well as the way in which they function in the world
EX: young black Americans must be very careful when interacting with law enforcement due to intense police brutality on black Americans
throuhgout history, establishing races based on color of skin effectively established the notion that social hierarchies are based on skin color
conveniently, those who established these hierarchies placed themselves at the tp
in order to progress past a society organized in racial hierarchies, we must make changes to the entire social system
dual consciousness, experienced by all who feel the internal struggle between different parts of their identity
Aren't Systems Just People - Johnson
importance of our roles in society, each societal system we are apart of will result in a change in our role
this change in our role sometimes creates internal conflict within ourselves, we are constantly reacting in situations based on the role in which we have placed ourselves
we often see ourselves as separate from the social system, which we are, but ind oing so we fail to acknowledge that we are the individuals who decide the rules of the system
we cannot remove ourselves from accountability by separating ourselves from the idea of the social system
in efforts to reconstruct or improve our social system, we must recognize that we as individuals are not the system and the system is not us, it goes far beyond a personal level
Where White Privilege Came From - Johnson
subjugating people to the idea that they are "less than", AKA white supremacy, makes racism easier to justify, EX: British calling Irish people savages or beasts
people in power (upper class) make race the common enemy among the lower class in order to distract them from unifying to a common goal of closing the wealth gap/elevating the standards of living among the lower class
it is more effective to change the way the social system functions as a whole instead of each individual participating in the system
What Is A "System of Privilege" - Johnson
recognizing the difference between social institutions and characteristics of social systems
White people individual may not all demonstrate white privilege, but white people in general participate in a social system that allows them to benefit from skin color privilege
white people are viewed as the "standard" making the social system revolve around us at the cost of everyone else
