Formative
Definition: A formative assessment is used to gather information about a student's learning. The teacher can use it to provide academic feedback and adjust instruction.
Door slap: Students will answer a question on a sticky note as an exit ticket. They will then (gently) slap it on the door as they leave.
Brain Dump: The teacher will "pause" the lesson for three minutes while she gives the students an opprtunity to reflect on what they're doing. They will turn to a partner and discuss what they have learned.

Summative
Definition: A summative assessment is given at the end of the unit. These assessments are given as a grade, as they give information about what and if a student has learned.
MAPS Testing: This summative test is given to students to measure achievement in different subject areas at the end of a semester.
End-of-Unit Exam: This test is given at the end of a unit to assess what students have learned at the end of a certain period.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic exams are used to identify a student's weakness or strengths to determine if they have a learning disability.
Running Record: A running record is used to assess a student's behavior while reading. It can be used to determine whether ot not they can move up a reading record.
Journal: A journal can be used as a diagnostic exam to identify and, eventually, correct misconceptions.
Performance
Definition: Performance exams are a way for student's to show their learning through a project or performing a task.
Play: Students will create, write, and perform a play to show their learning over a series of lessons.
