Elements of Racism :silhouettes:
Kendi's "How to Be an Anti-Racist"
Labeling the black individuals as the source of crime, and using that as a way to further racial stereotyping
It is easier to vilify than it is to forgive and create healing change. Crowds get more rallied and unified through anger and strong emotions
This could be true but not necessarily fair. It isn’t fair that one group should compromise to another rather than meet in the middle and join together
The rich get richer and minorities are shamed for a lack of result despite efforts
A perpetual cycle of employed systems that discourage people of color, and then criticism from white individuals that stereotype poc which makes them further discouraged, only to be called lazy
Discredits their emotions as a human; being afraid to climb or to be attacked and believing in stereotypes (relates to messages in Johnson's texts)
Johnson: 3 Texts
What makes up the systems? - people
People: Referring to ’systems’ of privilege disconnects the person from it and makes it easier to ‘say harsh things about’
“The U.S. is a racist society” = generalizes a group of people under one term despite being comprised of unique individuals
Social systems
Though societies can be social systems, they contain specific elements that differentiate them from other ‘systems’
Their differences produce different consequences
Family positions, relationships, relatedness, etc.
Family as a system: collection of elements related to one another to create a unit
Key understanding that people actually aren’t systems and vice versa.
The mindset that people are systems can make it difficult to get to the root of a problem, seeing the problem as the person rather than the circumstances the person is in
A person can enter a social system, not being fully part of it, and still understand how to identify that social system and act accordingly to the expectations. - does that group the entered person into the system? No. Because systems aren’t people
What is a 'System of Privilege' Privilege: an unearned advantage
White centeredness: putting white people at the center of attention
Advantages whether physically or socially; white individuals inherently have an advantage due to stereotypes
Does not literally give advantages or revoke advantage from others; more of a ‘phenomenon’ that put white individuals in favor of things
Privilege isn’t a material possession but an element of a social system
A majority of people can occupy a specific role but that doesn’t generalize the entire community, only that they are the most common
Pinning white individuals as white is a path of least resistance as part of stereotypes
Also pins minorities as an accessory: token character of color, culture appropriation, etc.
Where White Privilege Came From
History summary: British struggle to conquer Ireland birthed a series of racist, dehumanizing beliefs that were brought to North America and may have influenced early capitalism
Seeing a group of people as something to conquer is similar to capitalists seeing workers and resources as something to take advantage of and control all while receiving benefits
Dehumanizing to see people as objects and be greedy at the cost of people’s lives and wellbeing
Slavery also treats people as objects and things to control
Depicting being white as a power was an excuse for white individuals to explain their lack of own power or fortune and also blame capitalism on race instead of social class.
Using people of color as a scapegoat and villainizing them to uplift and motivate white peopl
Remembering a system is only active when individuals participate and chose to comply with them.
Refusing responsibility of guilt simply because you do not directly relate to it is another path of least resistance
Ted Talk: "The Danger of a Single Story"
'White-washed' history makes it difficult to open a meaningful conversation on social justice
"refers back to textual reference in Johnson on British colonization
Stereotyping people of color as illiterate and rewarding them for being civilized in any way
By treating human beings like this, when people of color do make an attempt to climb the social ladder and fail, they are criticized despite the systems in place that set up POC to fail
Treating people of color almost like children or an alien race; ostracizing them
Viewing their culture as foreign being that white is the 'standard'
Tip: I was very frustrated trying to figure out how to connect branches, so to signify connections, I put two different colored branches near each other or wrote specifically what it was connected to
