Questions for Diabetic Pt
When did you take insulin last?
Do you monitor your BIS levels? How Often?
What was your last BIS reading?
Do you know your A1C level?
When did you last eat?
PABCD Conscious Pt Hypoglycemia
P: Semi Fallors A/B: Maintain open airway C: Monitor pulse D:Oral Glucose, call EMS
Signs of Recovery: BIS returns to normal, Pt feels better, vitals normal, better mood
Hypoglycemia
Symptoms: Confusion, moist/clammy hands, bounding HR, sweating/cold, shakiness, vision problems, nervousness, pallor
Causes: Vomitted, Too much meds taken w/o eating, hasn't eaten at all, heavy exercise, excessive insulin
PABCD Unconscious Pt Hypglycemia
P: Supine A/B: Maintain open airway C: Monitor Pulse D:Call EMS and reevaluate for seizure, MI, CVA/TIA
Signs of Deterioration: Loss of consciousness, seizure, CVA or TIA, Cardiac arrest
Hyperglycemia
Symptoms: confusion, rapid breathing, polyphagia, ployuria, polydipsia, dehydration, fever
Causes: Pt taking too much sugar, not taking meds, infection, stress
Normal FPG Range <100 mg/dl Diabetic Pt 126 mg/dl or higher
