Diabetes Related Emergencies
Hypoglycemia
Causes:
Vomited
Taken too much medication and patient did not eat.
Exercised heavily.
Excessive insulin.
Symptoms:
Confusion
Bounding heart rate
Moist/clammy hands
Sweating/Cold
Shakiness
Vision problems
Nervousness
Pallor
PABCD Conscious Patient:
P: Semi-reclining
A/B: Maintain Open Airway
C: Monitor Pulse
D: Orange Juice, Call EMS, Oral Glucose as needed, O2 if needed.
PABCD Unconscious Patient:
P: Supine
A/B: Maintain Open Airway
C: Monitor Pulse
D: Call EMS. Consider seizures, cardiac arrest, CVA, or TIA
Hyperglycemia
Causes:
Pt consumes too much sugar.
Not taking meds
Infection
Stress
Symptoms:
Confusion
Rapid breathing
Triad Ps
Dehydration
Fever
Dry Skin
Sweat/Fruity Breath
PABCD:
Keep patient comfortable
FPG levels:
-Normal less than 100 mg/dl
-Prediabetes 100 mg/dl to 125 mg/dl
-Diabetes 126 mg/dl or higher
Sample questions:
When did you eat last?
When did you take your insulin?
Do you monitor your BlS levels? How Often?
What was your last BlS reading?
Do you know your A1C level?
Signs of Deterioration:
-Loss of consciousness
-Seizures
-Cardiac Arrest
-TIA
-CVA
Signs of Recovery:
Patient's BlS is within normal range.
