Hypoglycemia
Causes:
-Taken
too much
medication and
did not eat
-Exercised heavily
-
Excessive insulin
Symptoms:
-Confusion
-Bounding :<3: rate
-Moist/clammy hands
-Sweating/Cold
-Shakiness
-Vision problems
-Nervousness
-Pallor
Treatment: Conscious Pt.
P-
Semi-reclining
C-
Monitor pulse/oxygen
A/B-
Maintain open airway
D-
Call EMS, give oral glucose AS NEEDED, orange juice can work too
Signs of Deterioration:
-Loss of consciousness
-Seizures
-CVS or TIA
-Cardiac Arrest
Signs of Recovery:
Pt. appears more alert
Treatment : Unconscious Pt.

Maintain open Airway

Call EMS, no juice if unconscious
Hyperglycemia
Causes:
-Pt. consumes
too much sugar
-
Not taking meds
-Infection
-Stress
Symptoms:
-Confusion
-Rapid breathing
-Dehydration
-Fever
-Dry skin
-Sweet/fruity breath
-Triad P's (polydipsia- thirsty) (polyuria-frequent urine) (polyphagia- hungry)
Treatment:
Call EMS and await their arrival, monitor pt. while waiting for EMS

When did you last eat?
When did you take your insulin?
Do you monitor your BIS? How often?
What was your last BIS reading?
Do you know your A1C levels?
If a pt. doesn't know their BIS, we will take it here.
FPG levels normal blood sugar:
-3.9mmol/L -5.6 mmol/L
FPG levels- Diabetic Pt.
-<7.8 mmol/L
