Hyperglycemia
Causes
Pt consumes too much sugar, not taking meds, infection , stress
Symptoms
Confusion, rapid breathing, dehydration, fever, dry skin, sweet/fruity breath, thirst, excessive urination, appetite
Treatment
P:
Comfort
A/B:
Open airway
C:
Monitor vitals
D:
Have pt drink water, watch for DKA
FPG Levels
Normal
Less than 100mg/dL
Diabetic patients
126mg/dL or higher
Hypoglycemia
Symptoms
Sudden onset, confusion, nervousness, diaphoresis (cold/clammy), drooling, full bounding pulse, pallor
Treatment
P: Semi Reclining (supine if unconscious)
A/B: Maintain open airway, admin O2 if needed
C: Monitor pulse and blood pressure
D: Consider EMS, Check record for medications, admin oral oral sugar
Causes
Oral hypoglycemics or excess insulin

Do you know your A1C level?
When did you eat last:?
Signs of Recovery
Pt appears more alert
Vitals stable
Signs of Deterioration
Loss of consciousness
Vitals unstable
Consider seizure, cardiac arrest, anaphylaxis, CVA, or TIA
