What is epidemiology?
Epidemiology is the study of how disease id distributed in the populations and the factors what influence or determine this distribution.
Classically speaking -
EPI = upon
DEMONS = people
Ology = science
Distribution ( frequency + pattern )
Distribution
Frequency and patterns
Refers not only to the number of health events such as the number of cases of menigitis or diabetes in a population.
-The resulting rate allows epidemiologist to compare disease occurrence across different populations.
PATTERN
-Refers to the occurrence of health-related events by
time,place,and person.
-Place pattern include geographic variation,urban/ rural differences,and location of work sites or schools.
Determinants
determinants, which are the causes and other
factors that influence the occurrence of disease and
other health-related events.
OUTBREAKS, EPIDEMICS &
PANDEMICS
Which has never experienced the disease occur in numbers greater than expected in a defines area.
Epidemics
- It is an occurance of a group of illnesses of similar nature and derived from a common source.
Pandemic
: Global disease outbreak or an epidemic that affects a large proportion of the population across many country or the world
