Allergic reactions
Some people believe that GMO foods have more potential to trigger allergic reactions. This is because they may contain genes from an allergen — a food that prompts an allergic reaction. The World Health Organization (WHO) discourageTrusted Source genetic engineers from using DNA from allergens unless they can prove that the gene itself does not cause the problem. It is worth noting that there have been no reports of allergic effects of any GMO foods currently on the market.
Should they label if the food as Gm?
Yes, Shocking; 1st human anaphylaxis death caused by GMO tomatoes found containing fish genes. On 18 January 2015, the web site World News Daily Report published an article titled “Doctors Confirm First Human Death Officially Caused by GMOs.” The site claimed a man named Juan Pedro Ramos had died due to an allergic reaction to genetically modified tomatoes that had been altered with genes from fish:
Biodiversity
Where they are grown, GM crops occupy large surface areas and are linked to intensive monoculture systems that wipe out other crop and ecosystems. Growing only one kind of corn for human consumption will mean a reduction in flavors, traditional knowledge and food security.
Food Culture
GM products do not have historical or cultural links to a local area. In Italy for example, a significant part of its agricultural and food economy is based upon identity and the variety of local products. Introducing anonymous products with no history would weaken a system that also has close links to the tourism industry.

Tinkering with the genetic makeup of plants may result in changes to the food supply that introduce toxins or trigger allergic reactions.
An article in Food Science and Human Welfare said, “Three major health risks potentially associated with GM foods are: toxicity, allergenicity and genetic hazards.” The authors raised concerns that the GMO process could disrupt a plant’s genetic integrity, with the potential to activate toxins or change metabolic toxin levels in a ripple effect beyond detection.
Why is it banned?
A study published in Environmental Sciences Europe journal found severe liver and kidney damage, hormonal disturbances and large cancerous tumors in rats that were fed GM maize in conjunction with low levels of Roundup. Other studies have linked GMO feed to enlarged uteri and severe stomach inflammation in pigs. These and other studies have concluded that more research is needed before GMO foods can be accepted as safe.
Cancer
The WHO stated that eating GMO foods can contribute to the development of cancer. They argue that because the disease is caused by mutations in DNA, it is dangerous to introduce new genes into the body.
