Unit 45- Typical materials
Metal
Gold
properties
In mass, gold is a yellow-colored metal. Gold is a good conductor of electricity and heat. It is inert and a good reflector of infrared radiation. Gold is usually alloyed to increase its strength.
additive manufacturing
3D printing
Aluminium
properties
It is ductile and malleable.
The high purity aluminium has a much greater resistance to corrosion than the ordinary steel.
additive manufacturing
Extremely fine metal powder is partially melted
Steel
properties
The physical properties of steel include high strength, low weight, durability, ductility and resistance to corrosion. Steel, as we all know, offers great strength though it is light in weight.
additive manufacturing
Additive manufacturing (AM) of steels involves the layer by layer consolidation of powder or wire feedstock using a heating beam to form near net shape products.
silver
Properties
Silver ( Ag ) is a white, soft, lustrous, very ductile and malleable metal.
It is a very good conductor of electricity and heat.
It has the highest electrical conductivity of all metals, but the high cost of it has restricted us from using it
additive manufacturing
For the additive manufacturing industry is its use in dental alloys, electrical contacts and high capacity batteries.
titanium
properties
Titanium is lightweight, strong, and extremely resistant to corrosion. It has a shiny, dark grey/silver appearance and is non-toxic in the human body (which is why it is used in surgical tools)
additive manufacturing
titanium alloys are used in additive manufacturing to produce a wide range of industrial components, including blades, fasteners, rings, discs, hubs and vessels.
Polymers
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS)
properties
high toughness and strengths
high corrosion resistance
additive manufacturing

polyamides
properties
High Electrical conductivity.
Good vibration damping, strength, and toughness.
High dimensional stability, low coefficient of thermal expansion, and low abrasion.
Physical strength, specific toughness, light weight.
additive manufacturing
printing a three-dimensional part from the consumable material in a layer-by-layer manner
Composites
glass fillers within polymers
properties
high electrical insulating properties, low susceptibility to moisture and high mechanical properties.
additive manufacturing
A combined laser head focusses the laser radiation onto the glass fibre in order to melt the fibre. A three axis system is used to move the printing stage and glass substrate.
cermets
properties
high tensile strength
soundness
high temperature resistant
additive manufacturing
selective laser sintering/melting (SLS/SLM), laser engineering net shaping (LENS), direct laser fabrication (DLF), binder jet 3D printing
carbon fibre
properties
Physical strength, specific toughness, light weight.
High dimensional stability, low coefficient of thermal expansion, and low abrasion.
Good vibration damping, strength, and toughness.
Electrical conductivity.
additive manufacturing
Fused deposition modeling (FDM)
epoxy resins
properties
