Simple past and Past progressive
Used to
It is used to describe an action that started in the past, continued for a period of time, and recently ended in the past.
Structure
The helper used in the past simple is:
DID
Negative: Subject + did + not + verb in simple form
Question: Did + subject + verb in simple form
Positiva: Subject + Verb in past tense + complement
Used to
It is used to talk about an action that ended in a time prior to the current one.
Verbs
Regular verbs
In general we add -ed to all regular verbs.
finish → finished
talk → talked
wash → washed
Verbs that end in a vowel + -y add -ed.
play → played
To the verbs that end in a consonant + -y, change the "y" for "i" and add -ed (= -ied)
carry → carried
try → tried
study → studied
To verbs that end in -e, we just add a -d.
live → lived
like → liked
Irregular verbs
Do → Did
Feel → felt
Eat → ate
Find → found
Verbs
For most verbs, just add -ing.
ask → asking
go → going
eat → eating
If the verb ends in -e, remove the e before adding -ing.
Write→ writing
Come→ coming
Wake→ waking
Dance→ dancing
Take→ taking
If the verb ends in -ie, remove the ie and add -ying
tie→ tying
lie → lying
die→ dying
If the verb ends in a vowel + consonant, the consonant must be doubled before adding -ing.
Swim → swimming
Run→ running
Stop→ stopping
Begin→ beginning
Structure
The auxiliary used in the progressive past is:
Was / Were
Negative: Subject + Was/Were + Not + Verb gerund + Complement
Question: Was/Were + Subject + Verb gerund + Complement
Positive: Subject + Was/Were + Verb gerund + Complement
Were: You, We, They
Was: I, He, She, It
