Allergic Reaction
Anaphylactic Shock
Causes: Severe Allergic Reaction
Symptoms: Progressive respiratory and circulatory failure, itching of nose/hands, flushed face, feeling of substernal depression,
labored breathing, stridor, coughing, sudden hypotension, loss of consciousness.
PABCD
P: Recumbant (lying down)
A/B: Maintain Open Airway/Administer O2
C: Monitor Pulse & BP
D: Call EMS/Administer EPI
Epi for Adult:
0.3 mg 1:1,000 adult
Epinephrine Reaction
Symptoms: Rapid elevation in bp, epi interactions occur with several drug groups (eg, ergot derivatives such as bromocriptine; serotonin/nonepinephrine reuptake inhibitors like venlafaxine; and nonselective beta-adrenergic receptor blockers such as propranolol
PABCD
P: Patient comfort
A/B: Administer O2
C: Monitor pulse/Monitor Vital Signs (May take up to 20 min for BP to return to normal.)
D: Reassure patient.
Activate EMS
Epi for Child:
0.25 mg 1:1,000 age 6–12
0.12 mg 1:1,000 age 6 months to 6 years
Administer through middle third of the thigh.
Urticaria/Pruritus
Cause: Allergy
Symptoms:
Urticaria- red eruption on face, neck, hands, & arms.
Pruritus- itching of these areas
PABCD
P: Upright/Semi-reclining
A/B: O2 not necessary
C: Monitor Pulse/ Monitor Vitals
D: Activate EMS
Signs of Recovery:
Symptoms subside
Signs of Deterioration:
Eruptions/symptoms worsen: angioedema appears or other signs of anaphylaxis, respiratory distress.
