- - - - Summative assessments show where a learner is currently at in their accademic learning cycle. These are formal assessments such as the SATs ACTs gMat etc. They can also be end of unit tests to provide a formal grade to a student.
        
        Some people often mistakenly look at summative assessments to understand a learner and their abilities. Summative assessments only show what the learner has learned, retained and produce. They don’t show what the learner is capable of in a different context.
  - - - What is Formative Assessment?
        Formative assessment is the way that teachers monitor, evaluate and analyze student progress. It encompasses a wide variety of methods that take into account the learning needs of students, along with measurable comprehension and understanding of the content being taught. Unlike summative forms of assessment, formative is ongoing and transitory between lessons, with the teacher providing constant observation and feedback to the students as they progress through classroom activities/assignments.
        
        Examples : of formative assessments that can be implemented in the classroom.
        
        Peer Assessment Cards: These are used to encourage feedback through active learning. It is a method that is beneficial for creating a positive classroom climate and reinforcing collaborative values in the students. Each student is given a peer assessment card at the start of the school year and is asked to put it inside their classroom folder, locker, or another form of organization tool. The best way to use peer assessment cards is whilst the activity/assignment is ongoing, asking the students to choose one another as a form of focus during the process of the activity/assignment. They score each other based on their observations, which can change due to the objectives set by the teacher.
        
        Schoology is an extremely versatile and effective teaching tool. It allows the teacher to implement the use of many different learning methods, from the split classroom to project-based learning (PBL's) without the inclusion of raw materials, in turn being environmentally friendly. It allows the students to take control of their own projects/assignment deadlines and choose which one they would like to complete without any form of linear order or step-by-step process. Schoology allows the students access from home (24 hours a day), meaning they can work on their projects/assignments whenever the time suits. Schoology also monitors and grades the process of the students in the form of a 'live' grade book, this allows the teacher to examine and provide accurate feedback to students as they progress through the assignments/projects in class.
        
        Kahoot! is a quiz based app, designed in a competition format. It is a fun and user friendly form of software that encourages fast responses to a series of questions. It is useful in a classroom due to the user interface offering either individual or collaborative (team) participation. An example of how it can be used is as follows; students can be separated into teams, the teams all use a portable device such as a tablet or phone (as available) to access the app. The teacher displays an authentication code to access the quiz chosen/made for the class, the students then use the access code to log in to the quiz, choosing a team name in the process. Once everyone is logged in, it's ready to go.
        
        When to use: Formative can be used during the same unit (lesson) as a way to see if students are understanding what they've learned so far
        Why Formative assessment: To provide feedback to student skills and to help determine a students strengths and weaknesses and see the need for improvement
