When: Signs and gestures were used millions of years ago, even before spoken language. Signs and gestures evolved into what we know as ASL today.
What is australopithecines? They were the first humans - animals to have existed roughly 4 million years ago, it is said they only used their hands to communicate, no speech.
Application
How is ASL an example of an language? Both spoken language and ASL use phonology, morphology, and syntax. ASL has its own grammar, vocabulary, and sentence structure.
How are monkeys and primates related to ASL?
Three well known Gorillas named Washoe, Tatu, and Koko were successfully taught sign language. Koko the gorilla knew well over 1,000 signs, most of which were in ASL.
Why was signs and gestures significant to early humans? Signing allowed our human ancestors to remain quiet in order to not notify prey of their existence.
Comprehension
-
What is the difference between spoken language and ASL? The only difference is the brain processes spoken language through the ears and processes ASL through the eyes.
. Evaluation
Do you agree that sign language is an actual language? Definitely, as someone who's learning ASL, I'm familiar with the fact that ASL has its own grammatical rules, vocabulary, and specific sentence structure. When actually learning the language, you realize how complex it actually is.
What do you think about some people thinking ASL is not a language? I believe they are naïve, they automatically assume that just because it's strictly visual, that the signs and gestures do not follow a specific structure that spoken language does. When in fact, it's very similar just without the use of speech.
Analysis
How does spoken language contrast with ASL? Oral language relies on speech and uses hearing, while ASL relies on signs and gestures and is completely visual.
Synthesis
What would you predict will happen to ASL in the future? I predict ASL will still commonly be used between deaf individuals, however I suspect that signs are going to change. Throughout time, signs have changed and well continue to do so.
