      - Majority language contexts where the target language is dominant where the learner is living;

      - International contexts where L1 speakers of other languages adopt another language is a lingua franca.

      - Segregation – L2 learners are separated from others (bad results);
      - Mother tongue maintenance – Instruction in L1 to foster bilingualism;
      - Submersion – refers to the practice of placing minority language learners in mainstream context classes without any linguistic support (learners are left to sink or to swim);
      - Immersion – learners acquire L2 receiving content instruction in L2.
  - - - Motivation can be Instrumental, which refers to the drive to master a language for external purposes, such as a better job, and Integrative, driven by an intrinsic interest in foreign languages / a desire to interact socially with members of a target language community. This is irrelevant for kids because children don´t have a utilitarian motive, so research on this issue is impractical.

This is because what motivates and promotes the learning of language is the social need and the pragmatic demands of communication. However, teaching and learning a SL in mostly monolingual socio-linguistic contexts is a huge challenge, as we do not need to use English to function in society. To do so, schools set up artificial environments in which the foreign language becomes necessary for communication and academic success.
