Problem: Low Rate of COVID-19 Vaccinations in the US - Coggle Diagram
Problem: Low Rate of COVID-19 Vaccinations in the US
Symptoms
Higher rates of Covid
More deaths from Covid
More hospitalizations/Hospitals reaching capacity/provider fatigue
The people contracting the virus currently are predominantly unvaccinated
The people occupying ICU beds and dying from the virus are almost exclusively unvaccinated
Rise of violence in public places due to mandatory masks
Potential for further mutations and need for additional booster shots
Causes
History of mistrust of the medical field within the black community.
Effects of systemic racism due to past injustices and mistreatment of people of color, such as the Tuskegee Study
Lack of distribution in remote areas
Issues with infrastructure - locations of medical clinics, transportation, for low income communities
People cannot travel far or miss work to get their vaccine
Vaccine not available for children 12 and under. [Note there Pfizer awaiting approval from FDA for distribution for those 5-11]
Vaccine hesitancy
Scares about blood clots from J&J vaccine
Concerns about side effects
People think the vaccine was developed too quickly
Pregnant people are hesitant to get vaccinated
Lack of coordinated government efforts to get people vaccinated. States have different protocols and messaging from federal government has shifted over time and at times has contradicted themselves.
Misinformation/lack of information
There has been misinformation spread about vaccines generally, such as that vaccines cause autism (which has not been proven to be true)
Politicians/leaders not taking Covid seriously leads people to believe it is not that big of a problem
Politicians/leaders have actively spread misinformation about the vaccine and what it does
Consequences
Continued spread of the virus
US is slow to reach herd immunity (l55% of US population is fully vaccinated)
Rising formation of new variants that are at increasing risk of becoming resistant to the vaccines.
A continuation of unsafe public health measures implemented at the state level that will allow for the virus to spread to vulnerable populations
Negative effects on the economy
High unemployment rates
Inflation
Potential government shutdown over the rising debt, which has steadily increased during the pandemic due to aid.
Hospitals are running out of beds and supplies. ICU beds nation wide are close to reaching full capacity.
Toll on mental health
Lockdowns and lack of social interaction during the pandemic have affected people's mental health
Fear of job loss due to layoffs and worsening economy
Fear of getting sick
Negative effect on the international community
US patents early on prevented other countries from getting vaccines
US has vaccines no one is using, while other countries are struggling to get shots to everyone who wants one
