Can other people know us better than we know ourselves?
Answer:
To an extent
Theme: Language
AOK: History
WOK: Sense Perception
CLAIM: We do not always know what is best for other people just from what it may seem like to us because we do not know their own experiences and priorities. Just because some societies may be lacking in advancements does not mean they necessarily need help.
REASON: Indigenous tribes have their own functioning societies that have been built with structure; who are we to say what is deemed acceptable and what is not?
EXAMPLE: Uncontacted indigenous tribe Piripkura found isolated from civilization. People thought they needed "saving".
REASON: Societies have different functions so disrupting one system can lead to negative affects because we do not know the premises their society functions with; values do not always align.
AOK: Human Science
WOK: Emotion
CLAIM: Our understanding of ourselves is obstructed by blind spots, created by our wishes, fears, and unconscious motives. Oftentimes, we are our own harshest critic, so sometimes, others can know us better than we know ourselves.
EXAMPLE: Psychological studies show that other people know more about ourselves than we do ourselves. Some of these blind spots are likely due to a simple lack of information, whereas others are due to motivated distortions in our self-perceptions.
REASON: Depending on what a person have relate to, those are the behaviors they often notice the most. While we may be too busy focusing on specific attributes of ourselves, other aspects may get ignored. This is why some people may be able to notice behaviors about ourselves that we cannot.
REASON: Perceptions of others are clouded by our own needs and biases because of how our own values and opinions differ depending on the people we have grown up with. Psychologist have noticed how an individual may hyper-fixate on a specific flaw but others barely notice it.
WOK: Sense Perception
CLAIM: How others perceive us are often contorted by their own perception from the norms of what they have been accustomed to growing up.
EXAMPLE: Because of my quiet personality and behaviors, people sometimes mistake it for rudeness. However, just because that is how they interpreted my behaviors means that what I am actually like.
REASON: People grow up in different environments so they interpret behaviors and actions differently, and their assumptions are not always accurate just because how they perceive it to be.
REASON: It is natural for others to form their own opinions and beliefs off of information that they know or have seen. This is how information gets spread around - because of curiosities, insecurities, and comparisons.
