Many people were unaware that American Sign Language had its own grammar
People where unware that American Sign language possessed many certain characteristics and patterns
People though American sign Language lacked internal structure and individual components
People later discovered that sign included characteristics like psychology and syntax and much more
Linguistics pertaining to sign language was totally unheard of
American Sign Language History
Spoken Language evolved from gestures instead of directly from speech
Signs were already used in American since 1817
After the civil war when education was mandatory, they decided to establish English as the main language not even considering ASL
Sign language was not formally taught in class rooms
Study of American Sign Language
During the early 1960's the study of linguistics became very popular
Gallaudet was extremely fascinated by ASL, he was convinced that ASL contained highly developed linguistics
People learned that ASL was more than gestures and that it was true language itself
Researchers learned that ASL was a farm more complex distant language than English
Deaf Children In schools
Many deaf children when entering school that came from hearing families didn't even know they had names
The deaf children that knew some sign language had learned from deaf families members
Deaf children would learn to conversate amongst themselves
