By 1960, home ownership had become the norm for the first time in American History, 3/5 families owned a house. Between 1950 and 1960, 18 million people moved to the suburbs . The term used to describe the suburban growth from Boston, Massachusetts to Washington DC, which encompassed NYC, Philadelphia and Baltimore was megalopolis. Not only did people migrate from inner cities to suburbs, they also migrated across the USA. Many deserted the north-east for life in the Sun Belt. Cities in Florida, Texas and California all grew rapidly in the 1950s. These included Dallas, San Diego,Los Angeles, Houston and Miami. By 1970, 80 million Americans lived in suburbs, 15 million more than lived in central cities.
