Titles of Jesus & who he is - titles, history & did he rise from…

- - - - wrote under pen name cause set out to to prove resurrection wasn't a historical fact = backlash from Christians

        has access to tomb & either could have order this to take place
        
        disciples didn't start proclaiming their message of resurrection until 40 days (ascension) or 50 days (Pentecost) later ... if either of these groups had taken the body & could have produced the body at that point, they probably realised it would probably not be recognisable enough to convince disciples it was Jesus
      - AGAINST
        
        the Jewish & roman authorities persecuted Christians for their beliefs ... but never tried to disprove the beliefs by producing a body.
        
        why would they have removed the grave clothes 1st?
        
        if either of these groups had taken the body why didn't they produce it to "destroy the credibility of anyone asserting the physical resurrection of Jesus"? (Morison)
        
        desecrating a grave was very sinful according to Jewish law ... so if the Jewish religious authorities had taken the body they would never admit it
    - - FOR
        
        whatever his motives as a member of the Sanhedrin, he may well have had the connection to approach Pilate & get the relevant permissions to move the body in the 1st place & then could've decided to move it to avoid a popular demonstration at the tomb once the Sabbath was over
      - AGAINST
        
        this story is assumed to be historically true, although he doesn't appear previously in the gospels
        
        no effort made to bury the either 2 crucified next to Jesus - so actions seem not to be guided by wanting to keep the law
        
        it would have been an honour for Jesus' body yo remain in his tomb - why move it? - why remove the grave clothes first?
        
        if he had it moved to another tomb surly the location would have recorded/discovered to become a place of worship OR used to disprove the resurrection claims of the disciples?
      - "you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight. Be sure to bury it the same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God's curse" - law
      - standard practice was for romans to bury crucified prisoners in unmarked, shallow graves to be dug up & eaten by wild animals
    - - AGAINST - couldn't have they were fleeing for their lives
  - - - 1 idea is he survived & was rescued by Essene allies in white (mistaken for angels by women), made disappearances to disciples but finally died 40 days later which was mistaken for the ascension by disciples
      - another idea is the disciples gave him a drug so he would seem to die on the cross & later recover
      - others suggested he went onto a coma but the cold air i tomb naturally woke him
      - idea that he was recued from cross or someone else died in his place is popular Muslim view
    - - 'explains' the gospel stories of resurrection appearances
      - its an idea people find fascinating. E.g. Holt Blood, Holy Grail (1982) speculated Pilate was bribed to allow him to be rescued before he died & then went on to love on the south with Maty Magdalene (his wife)
    - - ignores medical evidence about the 'deadly character of the wounds; from he crucifixion
      - even if Jesus had survived, surely he would be too weak & in need of medical treatment to move the stone/or convince the disciples he was the glorious risen Christ
  - - - area was full of rock tombs that looked very similar & in darkness before dawn they made a mistake
      - the 'angel' that told them Jesus was not there was a gardener trying to indicate the real tomb with the words "see the place where they laid him" (Mark 16:6) but they were so frightened & fled
      - if the disciples had already fled back to Galilee & experienced 'appearances' (hallucinations?) of Jesus, when they returned to Jerusalem the story of the empty tomb from the women weeks later suggested the idea that Jesus had risen on the 3rd day
    - - why would a gardener be working in the dark (or if it was light .. then who would they have gone to the wrong tomb)
      - surely unlikely the disciples would have fled Jerusalem in fear but left the women ... also gospel narratives all suggest the disciples remained in hiding in Jerusalem immediately after the crucifixion
      - gospel accounts say very specifically the women had seen where the body was laid
  - - - if no-one found it empty then no-one would any reason to formulate any sort of defence about any claims of an empty tomb
      - in earliest accounts of preaching of early church its predominantly a spiritual (not bodily) resurrection that is proclaimed & the empty tomb isn't mentioned
    - - this doesn't account for what happened afterwards - the disciples became so convinced of resurrection & preached about it 1st in Jerusalem (where anyone could of gone & checked)
      - would the disciples have been prepared to endure terrible persecution & die fore beliefs they knew a lie?
- - - - these 3 ideas combined to undermine the idea that the resurrection of Jesus was even plausible as a historical figure

      - 3 - women take message to disciples
