Supervisor meeting notes - 2021-09-20
Only Mark and I present
Next week Mark may be at BU in person, but will defo be at the meeting if held virtually
Can Derek or Kate do a meeting in person next week?
pXRF method and progress
Derek and Mark's number of different points of analyses calculated on basis of statistics
Unclear if they experimented between using soil or mining modes, however
Mark also shared concerns about changing both number of analyses per sherd and changing sampling times
If I do change beam times and number of samples per offcut, I will really need to unarguably demonstrate that it still produces valid results, as both Kate and Mark have been concerned about this aspect
Clarify proposed method in the coming week and submit a document outlining proposed method only if statistics behind it are concrete
Outline pXRF method selection as a process and weigh up pros and cons at each stage, e.g.
Mining mode vs Soil mode
Beam times and relationship with repeat analyses
How often should I do standard analyses?
Every 10, 15 or 20 sherds?
Which elements am I really analysing for? How does infinite thickness concept refine elements available to analyse for?
HE feedback
Mark did confirm that it seemed like HE had not really pored over application in depth
Mark recommends that best way to reply to request is perhaps via a cover letter supplementing the application, so that the response is more direct and explicit and cannot be ignored by reviewers
Did say to discuss with Stephen as he might approach it differently
Mark also recommends that best response to changes is to be positive and emphasise that study with Maurice shows that pXRF can usefully characterise stone when taken from beyond contamination depth
Emphasis would therefore be that there is no need for a trial as the method has been shown to work. HE are unlikely to be swayed by the limited time available to me in my PhD or by the fact that if it doesn't work the samples can be used again later, as they only care about immediate value in exchange for the limited damage to the monument
This implies we should focus on why the technique will work and why a large number of samples is required at once
Remember that 45 samples is only a small number of samples from a complex where you could sample hundreds or thousands of in-situ stones!
Cliveden progress
Began process of adding Cliveden as a BU supplier
Should be concluded in a week or two
Hopefully sampling can take place in October
May not be enough money to do both in situ and ex-situ sampling, but will see what happens further down the line
Meeting in October
Send out calendar invite specifying time to be at RB
Apples
Poor year in Hampshire as well, though Dorset not as badly affected
pXRF sampling strategy
500 offcuts thick enough to sample
Analyse a representative sample of the different fabric grups that comprise the entire assemblage
Mark suggested at least 10 analyses per fabric group, but I would prefer a far greater number if possible
How many offcuts can I feasibly analyse?
How large is the corpus of Gloucester material and how many sherds could be analysed using pXRF?
How long would a hypothetical sampling strategy take when factoring in warmup hour at beginning as well as replicate analyses of standards?
