Voice
Using the voice
Audibility
Variety
students at the back of the class
voice quality - no shout
good voice projection is more important than volume
important to vary the quality of their voices according to the type of lesson and the type of activity
speaking quietly is often just as effective as using very loud voices
for teachers who almost never raise their voices, shouting can be beneficial
Conservation
correct breathing
breathing correctly = being relaxed
conserving our voice ro the days, week, weeks!!
Talking to students
it requires to empathise with the people they are talking to
Rough-tuning is the simplification of language which both parents and teachers make in order to increase the chances of their being understood
1.they should consider the kind of language that students are likely to understand
- they need to think about what they wish to say to the students and how best to do it
- they need to consider the manner in which they will speak (e.g. intonation)
Physical movements, gestures, facial expressions
Giving instructions
they must be kept as simple as possible
they must be logical
What is the important information I am trying to convey?
What must the students know if they are to complete this activity successfully? What information do they need first?
Which should come next?
Check that the students have understood what they are being asked to do
Student talk (STT) and teacher talk (TTT)
TTT
do not overuse
students can get a chance to hear the language
comprehensible input
STT
best lessons are where it is maximised
not afraid to summarise, to tell a story
Good teachers use their common sense and experience to get the balance right!!!
