Darry gets very frustrated with Ponyboy, in result Ponyboy thinks he is too harsh on him.
“You’re living in a vacuum, Pony, and you’re going to have to cut it out. Johnny and Dallas were our buddies, too, but you don’t just stop living because you lose someone.”

This was the first time Darry had ever shown much emotion towards Ponyboy. The realisation hits Ponyboy that Darry truly does care, no matter how harsh he is.
‘I remembered how close he and Dad had been, and I wondered how I could ever have thought him hard and unfeeling. I listened to his heart pounding through his T-shirt and knew everything was going to be okay now.’
Ponyboy finds comfort in Darry and realises that he really does miss their parents so much, as his silent fear is losing someone close to him again.
