Do you monitor your BLS levels? How often?
What was your last BLS reading?
When did you take your insulin?
Do you know your A1C level?
When did you last eat?
Signs of deterioration
Vital signs are unstable
Re-evaluate diagnosis
Loss of consciousness
Hypoglycemia
Symptoms
Sweating/cold
Shakiness
Moist/clammy hands
Vision problems
Bounding heart rate
Nervousness
Confusion
Pallor
PABCD
P: Semi-reclining
A/b: maintain open airway
C: monitor pulse
D: Administer glucose, monitor vital signs, activate EMS
Causes
Taken too much medication and did not eat
Exercised heavily
Vomited
Excessive insulin
Hyperglycemia
Symptoms:
Rapid breathing
Triad Ps
Confusion
Dehydration
Fever
Dry skin
Sweet/fruity breath
Causes:
Not taking meds
Infection
Pt consumes too much sugar
Stress
FPG Levels:
Normal: Less than 100mg/dl
Diabetic: 126 mg/dl or higher
Signs of recovery
Pt appears more alert
