SUBJECT AND OBJECTQUESTIONS
OBJECT QUESTIONS
The object questions are the most common questions in English. These are used when you know who the person is and would like to get some information about them.
With question word
Form:
Question word + auxiliary verb +subject + main verb + complements ?
e.g. Jeremy bought a mug in Ireland.
What did Jeremy buy in Ireland? A mug.
Where did Jeremy buy this nice mug? In Ireland.
The auxiliary verb will depend on the verb tense used. In this case it is
did
because the verb of the phrase is in the past simple.
We usually form object questions by inverting the word order where an auxiliary or modal verb is present.
He is a doctor
Is he a doctor? Yes, he is/ no, he isn't.
He can swim
Can he swim? Yes, he can/ no, he can't.
When there is no auxiliary or modal verb, we use
do
to form the object question instead.
e.g. I know her from school.
Do you know her from school?
SUBJECT QUESTIONS
The subject questions are used to know who or what performs the action, that is, we ask questions about the subject of a sentence.
Subject questions are formed by using the question word as the subject of the sentence instead. We do not use an auxiliary verb and we do no invert the word order
Question word + main verb + complements) ?
Who bought this nice mug in Ireland? Jeremy.
Some of the most used question words in subject questions:
Who
answered the phone?
What
happended at the party?
Which
car arrived first?
Whose
dog bit you?
How many
people attended the concert?
