Ulcer
size varies
Deep loss of epithelial layer that may extend to connective tissue layers as with recurrent aphthous ulcer o the labial mucosa
Atrophy
size varies
Thinning of tissue layers with shiny and translucent appearance as with erosive lichen planus on the lower lip
Macule
size <1 cm
Flat nonpalpable area as with petechiae on the palate with infectious mononucleosis
Papule
size <0.5 cm
Palpable circumscribed solid elevation as with oral fibroma on the buccal mucosa
Bulla
size >0.5 cm
Large circumscribed blister containing clear watery fluid or blood as with pemphigus on the labial mucosa
Nodule
size 0.5-2 cm
Elevated solid mass more deep and firm than a papule as with a torus on the palate
Plaque
size >0.5 cm
Discrete, slightly elevated area of altered texture or coloration as with hairy leukoplakia on tongue with HIV infection
Pustule
size varies
Similar to vesicle but filled with pus as with periodontal abscess on attached gingiva
Vesicle
size <0.5 cm
Small circumscribed blister filled with clear watery fluid as with herpes labialis at the labial commissure
