Found only in thick skin of palms and soles
Stratum Corneum
Outermost layer with keratinized cells
Dermis
reticular
goes upwards towards epidermis
Dermal
Thick bottom layer, supports the skin with blood cells & connective tissue
Subcutaneous (not a main layer)
Known as hypodermis in some cases

Major Functions of the Skin
Protection of underlying tissue
Vitamin D production
Body Temperature: keeps homeostasis with sweat, activation & vasoconstriction of dermal vessels
Has sensory receptors
Protection: keeps substances & pathogenic microorganisms away
Heals wounds
Degree of Burns
2nd Degree
destroys some epidermis and some dermis (hurts the most)
1st Degree
Only hurts epidermis (superficial)
3rd Degree
Destroys the epidermis, dermis & accessory structures (tolerable pain)
