Chapter 4 Concept map. Main Idea: Deaf Communities
Deaf
cannot hear many sounds
sometimes the hearing cannot be fixed, the ears a considered something that cannot be "fixed"
example is like watching tv with the sound completely off
some cannot speak and some have limited speech
some prefer not to speak at all and solely sign or write to communicate
Hard of Hearing
can hear some sounds
hearing aids can be helpful
some have good speech while others do not speak clearly
they can hear a bit, but not very loudly. example would be a low tv volume while watching tv.
isolation
this chapter focuses on early times, farming days. Most deaf children and adults who were deaf during this time stayed on the farm and lived in isolation.
most of the time they did not go to school, but some lucky ones did
deaf clubs and sports came to life shortly after world war 1
deaf people were npo included in religion until the 19th century
insurance companies believed deaf people were high-risk and accident prone

after world war 1 many factory jobs opened up to deaf people
after world war ll a lot of deaf people got laid off, and this became a difficult time for the community
in 1954 AAAD (american athletic association of the deaf) was established
deaf clubs died out in 2000's
