The World's Wife
Little Red Cap
Themes:
Forced maturity, Innocence foregone,
Lost purity, Regrets over youthful rashness,
Pays homage to Little Red Riding Hood. Uses a fairy tale to reference her youth, her childhood and how it has since passed
TOK Links:
Responsibility
There is an underlying sense of responsibility that falls upon both Little Red Cap and the "wolf". Under certain moral and ethical standards, the "wolf" should have never even accepted Little Red Cap because she was making a rash decision and he should have turned her away. Little Red Cap's responsibility lies in her choice to forego her purity and innocence. She suffers the consequences by spending years confused and unsatisfied with life.
Linguistic Techniques:
Symbolism, Enjambment
Concepts:
Perspective, Transformation
The premature and forced transformation of Little Red Cap into adulthood directly lead to the life which she came to regret. This is emphasised because the text implicitly suggests that the relationship was entirely physical and one-sided. Her perspective changes over time and realises the toxicity of this relationship.
Mrs Sisyphus
Themes:
Resent and melancholy from the realisation of a failed relationship that one was heavily invested in
(Unbalanced relationships)
Mrs Sisyphus is the wife of Sisyphus, the man from Greek mythology cursed to perpetually push a rock up a slope before it rolls back down.
-
Concepts: Identity
Mrs Sisyphus is only remembered as Sisyphus' wife. Her identity revolves around her husband whom is so greatly emphasised in mythology while her name is omitted.
TOK Links: Interpretation, Perspective
To most people, Sisyphus being cursed to ceaselessly push a boulder up a mountain makes them feel empathy for him. However, for Mrs Sisyphus, she feels both resent and melancholy over Sisyphus' curse. This is because Sisyphus so tirelessly dedicates himself to a futile task and yet he is willing to do so, suggesting that perhaps he was not nearly this committed or dedicated to her.
Penelope
Themes:
Loyal and virtuous women who are under-appreciated and disregarded in history, Value beyond "his wife"
Penelope is the faithful wife of Odysseus. She stayed loyal through the 20 odd years he embarked on his journey depicted in "The Odyssey".
TOK Links: Values, Responsibility
Penelope is looked at as the role model for loyal and virtuous woman. She has strong values which she manages to abide by over 20 long years even after Odysseus left her.
Concepts: Creativity
While Odysseus was away, she developed a passion for sewing, or rather sowing stories into her embroidery. She took advantage of this passion to keep suitors at bay.
Recurring Overarching Theme: Perspectives in stories and famous texts that focus on the males perspective and omits the females' story which is equally as valuable.
