Population density and distribution - Coggle Diagram
Population density and distribution
total population/total area (km) = population density
Population distribution is uneven and most of the total population, lives in 1/3 of the available area
Only 11% of the earth surface is comfortably habitable
30% of the total earth surface is land (the rest is water)
Factors influencing the distribution
Physical (natural) factors
Climate---> tend to avoid living in polar areas and tropical deserts. Prefer to live in temperate and tropical areas
Water supply--->rivers, lakes and aquifers
Soils---> fertility of the soil (many minerals and well-drained; across flood plains and deltas and volcanic areas)
Relief (topography)--->tend to be low in steep areas (diffiulties for farming and communications)
Natural resources---> areas with abundant natural resources provide employment and income
Human factors
Economic --->transport and capital in order to locate an industry
Political ---> government investment in infrastructures and services
Social factors ---> housing, healthcare, education, cultural opportunities
Cultural factors ---> traditional expectation for large families. Some group of people prefer to live together for security and frienship
Sometimes urban areas may grow up in places that are otherwise sparsely populated
growing tourist destinations
market towns
Near rivers
strategic commercial positions
Oasis
new towns created by government policies
dry areas in a marshy land
sheltered and fertile valley in a highland area
