use wood material but go through a process to make into sheets
much more stable
will not warp or bend
plywood
layers of veneer (plies)
layers are glued together at 90 degrees
odd number of layers
this makes it strong in all directions
MDF
made from fine particles of timber - mixed with a resin
safety hazard - dust produced when cutting is harmful
comes in large sheets - different thickness (3, 6, 9, 12, 24mm)
blockboard
strips of wood glued together
hardboard
fine wood particles bonded with resin to produce inexpensive, flat panels
like MDF but more dense
chipboard
larger pieces of timber bonded with resin
cheap and low quality
low quality, absorbs water
