Use wood material but go through a process to make into sheets
much more stable
will not warp or bend
blockboard
strips of softwood glued together and faced with hardbboard on the outside
very stable - used for worktops and shelves
Plywood
layers of veneer (plies)
layers are glued together at 90 degrees (strong in all directions)
odd number of layers
MDF (Medium Density Fibreboard)
made from fine particles of timber - mixed with resin
comes in large sheets - different thickenss (3,6,9,12,24mm)
Safety hazard - dust produced when cutting is harmful - ensure good ventilation and mask etc
hardboard
wood particles - mixed with resin
like MDF but more dense
used for drawer bottoms / tool walls etc
chipboard
larger particles of timber - mixed with resin
used for boarding - construction
