Hard wood
-
The fibres are bonded with glues and pressed into sheets to produce a tough board that is smooth on one side and textured on the other.
Hardboard is cheap, but is not as strong as other types of board.
It absorbs water, and so is not suitable for exterior use.
It is supplied in various sizes of sheet up to 2440mm × 1220mm, and 3mm thick.
Chipwood
Chipboard, or ‘particle board’, is made up of small particles of wood bonded together with resin, and formed into sheets by compression.
It is not as strong as plywood and blockboard, but it is not expensive.
