Seasoning and Care of Timber - Coggle Diagram
Seasoning and Care of Timber
Tree trunks need to be cut into planks first
Drying and Seasoning - removes moisture
Kiln
quicker - but more expensive
Leave to dry naturally (1 year)
Less likely to warp and bend / lighter
Structure of Wood
Heartwood (inside) and Sapwood (outside)
Grain runs lengthways
rings on the tree show you how old it is
Warping (bending and mishaping)
due to poor seasoning and reaction to temperature and humidity
We want to avoid this when using timber
Knots
Knots come from roots and branches
