Teaching Sign Methods:
Child-Directed Speech:
- Parents use repetition, exaggerated pronunciation, and emphasis.
Child-Directed Signs:
- use same techniques with sign language; signing- slower, bigger, and exaggerated
Conversational triangle:
- animated ; singing close to body/objects to see relation between sign and object
Bilingual Programs:
1)Teachers provide background knowledge in ASL.
2) ASL is used as the language of instruction.
3) ASL and English literacy skills are developed through different strategies bridging both languages
4) Students are taught both ASL and English grammar.
5) Teachers are trained in ASL/English bilingual strategies.
ASL --> English Methods:
Chaining, sandwiching, or bridging:
- back and forth between ASL and English
Sign word--> finger spell word--> point to English word
Translation:
- ASL to English or English to ASL
Codeswitching:
- identifying like words to better convey another word
