layers of the skin
epidermis: thin, outer layer of stratified squamous epithelium, protects against water loss
stratum lucidium: layer between the stratum granulosum and the stratum corneum, which is found only in the thick skin of the palms and soles
stratum granulosum : helps to form a waterproof barrier that functions to prevent fluid loss from the body
stratum corneum: outermost layer; dead, flattened, keratinized cells; these are continually being shed from the outer skin surface
stratum spinosum: the layers of prickle cells over the layer of the stratum basale capable of undergoing mitosis
-
-
dermis: thicker, inner layer of connective tissue, blood vessels, smooth muscle and nervous tissue
-
-
oil glands: they secrete a substance called sebum, a mixture of fatty substances, entire sebum producing cells , and epitheleal cell debris
-
hypodermis

cutaneous Melanoma
usually appears on the skin on the back of the limbs arising from normal-appearing skin or from a mole (nevus)
the lesion spreads horizontally through the skin, but eventually may thicken and grow downward , invading deeper tissues
once the lesion thickens and deepens, it becomes very difficult to treat
