Endocrine Syterm. - Coggle Diagram
Endocrine Syterm.
What is it?
The Endocrine System has a series of glands which release chemicals (hormones) throughout the body and other bodily fluids.
-
-
This communicates, much like the neurons do, messages to organs in the body.
-
Endocrine glands
- It is a special group of cells within the endocrine system who function is too produce and secrete hormones.
-
-
Target Cells
- A given hormone usually affects only a limited number of cells.
- Target cells have receptors for that specific hormone.
- Cells without the receptors cannot by directly influenced by the hormone.
Moreee
Although they come into contact with most cells in the body, a given hormone usually only affects a limited number of cells - target cells
-
When enough receptor sites are stimulated by hormones, physiological response in the target cell
How do hormones work?
- When enough receptor sites are stimulated by hormones, a physiological reaction happens in the target cell.
- Timing of hormone release and levels of hormone released are critical for normal functioning.
-
Endocrine regulation
It ensures stable concentrations of hormones in the bloodstream which is vital to avoid dysfunction of bodily system.
The cycle
- A signal is sent from the hypothalamus to the pituitary gland in the form of a ‘releasing hormone’.
- This causes the pituitary gland to secrete a ‘stimulating hormone’ into the bloodstream.
- This hormone then signals the target gland (e.g. the adrenal glands) to secrete its hormone.
- As levels of this hormone rises in the bloodstream, the hypothalamus shuts down secretion of the releasing hormone and the pituitary gland shuts down secretion of the stimulating hormone.
- This slows down secretion of the target glands hormone.
- = stable concentrations of hormones circulating in the bloodstream.
-
Hormones
- They are chemicals that circulate in the bloodstream.
- They at at the body's chemical messages.
- They are carried to target sites throughout the body.
- A given hormone usually affects only a limited number of cells in the body == specific receptors for specific hormones.
- Cells that do not have such receptor cannot be influenced direct by that hormone.
