Consider areas of potential roadblocks. Speak with student about what they're struggling with to identify what challenges the student is facing.
Pre-Referral: Create a performance plan with the student and their family and continue to monitor student's progress. Make sure to build in activities the student will succeed at so the student gains self-confidence; this is imperative for student success as emphasized by Christy Hutton. Reassess after 3 months of trying performance plan. Is the student improving? If not, consider an outside evaluation.
Speak with student's family, counselor and school specialist about whether the student be tested for a potential learning difference.

Address homework, in-class activities, behavior and assessments. The student may need extra support with executive functioning skills. There should be a plan in place that involves the parents and teachers so there is consistency and accountability.

Specific content area. Solutions: scaffold instruction using the method of instruction that works best. For example if the student struggles with reading, provide audio books and recorded instructions for the student to replay at their own pace.
Give student access to activities and assignments in advance so they have more time to process. 2. Make a numbered list of tasks on the board or somewhere visible to all. 3. Check-in with the student after 5 minutes or assign them a "buddy" to help with task completion.
Environmental Distractions. Create a productive environment whether that means sitting in a particular place or using headphones to block out noise while working.

Executive Functioning Skills. Provide visual agenda with assignments and necessary materials. Check-in with your students at the end of class to make sure they are clear about any assignments.

Share this information with the students parents, other teachers and administrators. Put it in their student notes/profile if one is available.
