tuberculosis
definition
an infectious bacterial disease characterized by the growth of nodules (tubercles) in the tissues, especially the lungs.
signs and symptoms
a persistent cough that lasts more than 3 weeks and usually brings up phlegm, which may be bloody.

prevention
Take all of your medicines as they're prescribed, until your doctor takes you off them.

causes

Substance abuse. People who are IV/injection drug users and alcoholics have a greater chance of acquiring tuberculosis.

Overcrowding. Living in an overcrowded, substandard housing increases the spreading of the infection.

Ineffective airway clearance related to thick, viscous, or bloody secretions.

prevention
Don't smoke. If you've never smoked, don't start.

Avoid carcinogens at work. Take precautions to protect yourself from exposure to toxic chemicals at work.
Exercise most days of the week. If you don't exercise regularly, start out slowly. Try to exercise most days of the week.
risk factors
Smoking. Your risk of lung cancer increases with the number of cigarettes you smoke each day and the number of years you have smoked
Exposure to secondhand smoke. Even if you don't smoke, your risk of lung cancer increases if you're exposed to secondhand smoke.
Previous radiation therapy. If you've undergone radiation therapy to the chest for another type of cancer, you may have an increased risk of developing lung cancer
