Four characteristics: Expanded language practices, Developmental complexity, Degree of proficiency, Simultaneity of modalities.
Oracy: listening and speaking
Literacy: reading and writing
Signacy: Ability to attend to signs / produce signs
Developmental complexity
- 3 Dimensions: Family context, age of deafness, degree of deafness
Degree of Proficiency
- Receptive Ability (attending) & Productive Ability (producing)
Contact Signing: Mouthing simultaneously to signing
Subtractive Bilingualism: home language is - and school language +
Additive Bilingualism: second language added in school
Transglossia
Disglossia: must be functional differentiation between 2 languages
"Bilinguals use their languages in interdependent ways"
Transglossia: dynamic communicative network, with multiple operating in functional interrelationships
