Ecosystem.
An ecosystem is made up of two inseparable components:
Abiotic: Abiotic components are the non-living component of an ecosystem. It includes
air, water, soil, minerals, sunlight, temperature, nutrients, wind, altitude, etc.
biotic: a set of living organisms such as animals, plants or micro-organisms, that are in
constant interaction and are, therefore, in a situation of interdependence.
Types of Ecosystems
An ecosystem can be as small as an oasis in a desert, or as big as an ocean. There are two
types of ecosystems:
•Terrestrial Ecosystem
Terrestrial ecosystems are exclusively land-based
ecosystems. Ther are differents type of terrestrial ecosystem distributed araund various geological zones. Ther are ah follows:
Forest Ecosystems
Grassland Ecosystems
Tundra Ecosystems
Desert Ecosystem
Aquatic Ecosystem
They are ecosystems present in a body of water. These can be further divided into two types,
namely:
Freshwater Ecosystem
Marine Ecosystem
Functions of Ecosystem
The functions of the ecosystem are as follows:
.
It regulates the essential ecological processes, supports life systems and renders stability
It is also responsible for the cycling of nutrients between biotic and abiotic componentes
It maintains a balance among the various trophic levels in the ecosystem.
It cycles the minerals through the biosphere.
The abiotic components help in the synthesis of organic components that involves the exchance
It is a community or group of living organisms that live in and interact with each other in a
specific environment.
