Mutli-Store model of memory - Coggle Diagram
Mutli-Store model of memory
Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968)
Sensory register; A stimulus fron the environment (sense)
Store for each of the senses
MSM describes how information flows through the memory system.
Duration; <0.5 seconds
Capacity; high
Coding; Depends on the sense
Long term memory
Capacity;unlimited
Coding;semantic
Duration; life time
Short term memory
Capacity; 7+/- 2 items
Coding;acoustic
Duration;30 seconds
MSM evaluation
Baddeley (1966) found that we tend to mix up words that sound similar when using our STM.
But we mix up words with similar meanings when we use our LTMs.
THis shows that coding in STM is acoustic and coding in LTM is semantic.
Shows the MSM's view that two memory stores are seperate and different.
Supported by research showing that STM and LTM are different.
A limitation is that there is evidence to show more than one type of STM.
Another limitation is how it only shows one type of rehearsal
A limitation is that the research uses artifical materials
Over simplified
