- - - - Fetch- An instruction is taken from the computers memory and brought to the CPU.
    - - The CPU looks at the instruction and works out what to do with it.
    - - The instruction is displayed on an output device.
  - - - Controls the flow of data around the CPU.
    - - Moves instructions and data around a CPU.
    - - Holds data that the CPU is likely to use.
    - - Performs arithmetic deals and logic.
    - - One tick=One execution.
  - - - The design upon which many general purpose computers are based.
    - - Memory address register (MAR)
        
        Contains the location of the next instruction / data to be fetched by RAM. Its then passed to ram through an address bus.
      - Program counter (PC)
        
        Used to identify the location of the next instruction (or data) to be executed by the cpu.
      - Memory data register (MDR)
        
        When the cpu needs to fetch an instruction or data from ram, it is initially stored in mdr. Its then moved to the relevant register in order to be processed.
      - Current instruction register (CIR)
        
        After fetching an instruction from ram, it is then transferred to here to be decoded and executed.
      - Accumulator (ACC)
        
        A register that temporarily stored data whist calculations are being performed within the alu.
  - - - Each clock tick is one processed instruction. Most CPU's can process 3 billion instructions per second. "Over-clocked" CPU's run faster, which means they need more cooling (fans).
    - - A very small but fast memory. It is a temporary storage between the CPU and RAM. It can be both in the CPU, or outside, however it always has an internal cache
    - - Modern CPU's are divided into cores. Each core is a complete processing unit and contains CPU registers. Multiple cores mean more more tasks can be carried out. This is known us multi-tasking.
