A large, independent wholesale hardware supplier is preparing to launch a project to upgrade its order management platform. In the initiating phase, the vision for the project is set by the project sponsor. The initial scope of the project is defined, the stakeholders are identified (IT, Sales, Finance, Merchandising, Supply Chain, Customer Service) and there is alignment of the project with the company’s overall strategic vision. Finally, the project manager is identified, selected, and authorized to lead the project with the full authority of the project sponsor. Proactively communicating the project manager’s authority is crucial for the project to succeed.
