Assessments of Learning
Assessment For Learning
Tools:Google Forms, Kahoot, Quizlet, Fist of Five, Yes/No Chart, Draw It Out, Turn and Talk, Think Pair Share
Teachers use Assessments in Learning to gather data while teaching. This helps the teacher to determine if the students are ready to move forward or if the concept needs to be retaught.
Assessment As Learning
Formative or Summative
During or After Learning
Examples: Exit Ticket, Written Journal Reflection, Podcast, or Vlog, Tracking Sheet for Assignments or Grades
Students use this assessment as a reflective tool for learning

Formative Data
During Learning
Teachers use Assessment of Learning to gather data that reveals if the students have met the standard or goal
Summative Data
After Learning
Examples: CASAS Post Test, TABE, SMARTER BALANCE, CAASP
Performance Assessments
(Bailey Lutynsky)
A performance assessment is a type of assessment that requires students to perform or complete a task, as opposed to traditional assessments where students typically select an answer from a ready-made list.
These measure how well students are able to apply their skills and knowledge to authentic, real-world problems
Note: Real-world or lifelike simulations using technology such as A.R. or V.R. can be used as a supplement. (i.e. virtual software can be used to simulate plant growth over longer periods of time than what would typically be available in a school year)

Can be formative or summative
Examples
Formative Examples
Extended oral discussion (conversation in foreign language, socratic seminar about a book, debate, discussion about a specific question)
Open-ended response exercises (journaling, written observations, reflections on a piece of literature or science experiment)
Summative Examples
Portfolios
Extended-tasks (chemistry lab, painting an object, revising a poem, taking care of a plant and documenting its growth daily, summer journal)
Project-based learning
Solve or discuss a problem for an extended amount of time (develop a hypothesis, explain how to solve a real-life math problem, talk in a foreign language for an amount of time)
keep in mind these examples can be adjusted to fit either criteria (i.e. formative/summative)*
Also known as "authentic" assessments
Can be paired with traditional testing
For instance, in the U.S. we take a written and performance-based driving exam to obtain a driver's license. This is an example of a performance assessment.
Performance assessments are paired with traditional assessments often in the medical field, in which students must perform clinical practices to demonstrate their abilities in the profession
Formative & Summative Assessments (Harris)
Summative Assessments
?
"Given at the end of a unit, summative assessments are used to evaluate the extent to which students have mastered their learning objectives"

Diagnostic Assessments (Jill Tang)
What is it?
A diagnostic assessment is a form of pre-assessment where teachers can evaluate students’ strengths, weaknesses, knowledge and skills before their instruction. An identical assessment may be given post-instruction to identify if students have met a course’s required learning objectives.
