Vitamin C deficiency

Causes

The diet that lacks vitamin C (fresh fruits and vegetables ), also over cook the vegetables can lack of Vitamin C.

Pregnancy

Breastfeeding

Disorders that cause a high fever and inflammation

Hyperthyroidism

Chronic diarrhoea

Surgery and burns

Diagnostic studies

Physical examination

Blood tests (Full blood count) to check for anemia

X-ray of the bones in children to check for bone impairement. [Peter C, 2017]

Signs and symptoms

Excessive use of alcohol and illegal drugs

Early signs maybe lethargy, anorexia, fatigue and irritability.

Anemia

Mylagia and bone pain

Inflammation and edema

Small red spots resulting from bleeding under the skin

Gum diseases and the loss of teeth

Poor wound healing

Severe jaundice

Haemolysis and spontaneous bleeding. [ Peter C, 2017]

Pathophysiology

There is a formation of intercellular cement substances in connective tissue and bones.

Resulting in weakened and capillaries with subsequent hemorrhage and deffects in bones and related structures.

There is an impairment of bone tissue growth of which in children causes lesions and poor bone bone growth.

There is an enlargement of the fibrous tissue that forms between the diaphysis, epiphyiasis and costochondral junction.

Densely calcified Fragments of cartilage are embanded in the fibrous tissue.

Due to small fractures subpereosteal hemorrhages may occur in both adults and peads. [ Peter C, 2017]

Treatment

Consumption of diet that is high in vitamin C

For scurvy in adults ascorbic acid 100mg to 500 mg three times a day is recomended orally. [ Peter C, 2017]
