Layers of the skin
Epidermis: The thin outer layer of the skin
Composed of kertainocytes, basement membrane, stratum spinosum, stratum granulosum, stratum lucidum, and stratum corneum
Dermis: The thick layer below the epidermis
made up of nerve endings, sweat glands and oil glands (sebaceous glands), hair follicles, and blood vessels.
Hypodermis: Underlies the skin made up of
fibroblasts, adipose tissue (fat cells), connective tissue, larger nerves and blood vessels, and macrophages.
Skin cancer & ABCD
Basal Cell Carcinoma: least malignant and most common, proliferate and slowly invade (hypo)dermis
Sqaumous cell carcinoma: Second most common, can metaastasize, looks scaley red and appears on scalp, lips, hands, or ears.
Melanoma: Most dangerous, key to survive is:
ABCD rule: A:asymmetry, B:Border irregularity, c:Color, and D:Diameter
