Neurological muscular disorders
( Ineffective breathing patterns and impared physical mobility)
Defination
These are disorders that affect nerves controlling voluntary muscles and the nerves that transmit information to the brain.
Signs and symptoms
Loss of muscle
Movement problems
Problems with balance
Trouble with swallowing
Weakness of muscles that can cause cramps, twitching, aches and pains.
Double eye vision
Droopy eyelids
Loss of sensation
Difficulty in breathing
Pathophisiology
Neuromuscular disorders affect the functioning of muscles caused by problem of nerves and muscles in the human body, muscle weakness is the primary signal.
Nursing care plan
Problem
Ineffective breathing patterns
Muscles weakness
Nursing diagnosis
Ineffective breathing patterns due changed chest expansion
Impared physical movement related to neuromuscular impairment.
Nursing intervention
Assess frequency and depth of breathing, check colour of the skin and capillary refill.
Observe signs of respiratory distress such as dyspnea impaired coughing as they may show neuromuscular problems.
Elevation of the patient's bed 35-45 degrees to increase expansion of the lungs thus decreases risk of secretions aspiration.
Assess saturation of oxygen to check the need of adjusting parameters, auscultate sounds of the lungs to check for signs of pneumonia.
Suction secretions to clear the airway and prevent aspiration.
Assess arterial blood gases and pulse. Monitor vital signs to detect any abnormalities. ( Mark Anthony Llego, 2017)
Assess level of motor function to help the patient with mobilizing body parts.
Monitor nutritional status of the patient, to take high fiber diet . Place the patient in a comfortable position and help the patient with changing position promoting relaxation and prevention of pressure sores.
Provide padding in prominent areas .
Refer patient to physiotherapists to check patients needs.
Promote mobility to prevent rigidity of the muscles.( Carpenito - Moyet, L.J , (2006).
Expected outcome
Patient to maintain effective breathing patterns
Patient will have improved functioning of the affected parts
Evaluation
The goal is effective breathing pattern to patient, check patient is breathing normal .Check the oxygen saturation respiration and pulse there are normal.
Patient will demonstrate good mobility with no restrictions.
Patient will demonstrate good mobility with no restrictions.
Causes
Genetic mutations
Dietary deficit
Metabolic disorders
Hormonal disorders
Viral infections
Specific drugs and poison
Autoimmune diseases
Some causes are unknown
Classification
Motor neurone disorder
Neuromuscular junction disorder
Neuropathies disorder
Myopathies and muscular dystrophies
