Maxs father knew Hans in WWI and Hans made a promise after Max's father was killed that he would always take care of his family since he sacrificed his life for Hans.
Max displays courage, perseverance, and patience when he is on the run and hiding. He displays this because he was hiding in storage unit for months and months not seeing the light of day. He stayed patient and determined to escape which after many months he finally was able to escape.
