Cultural Influences
African American
Early settlers in the slave trade noted the used of signs and gestures among African Interpreters and to communicate across tribes
Due to segregation, Black students and teachers were in their own classes for deaf schools and thus developed their own form of signing

Various settlers from different countries brought their signs with them (Spain, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Holland)

Euro-American
With influences like Clerc and Gallaudet, European signing was brought
E.M. Gallaudet opened a school for deaf and students from Clerc and Gallaudet went on to teach and spread their signing

Home Signs
Before going to schooling, children used homemade signs

When these people meet others, they bring their signs/language which overtime then joins their language to others'
